Question 1. What are the covers made of, and how long will they last ?
The covers are manufactured from a special high-tech Nylon, which is rip proof, hole proof and UV light stabilized. This material will last 5 years and beyond.
Question 2. Will they protect my stock from climatic extremes?
During periods of extreme heat the covers are designed to reflect heat and sunlight. As the goat walks, the covers are designed to pump air between the cover and the animal, thus creating a significant cooling effect. When the weather is cold, the covers help to retain body warmth. In 1973 after designing, patenting, and testing, many thousands of sheep were covered at various sites where it was found that sheep wearing covers were cooler in the Summer, warmer in the Winter, grazed longer, and were in better condition than the sheep that went uncovered. Interestingly, lambing rates were significantly higher, and also wool grew 1/2" to 3/4" longer.
Question 3. Will my wool be of higher quality?
It only makes sense that wool being protected by the covers from the elements will accumulate far less vegetable matter, dirt, and debris. This will obviously result in a much cleaner, softer, and more profitable fleece. A covered fleece also tends to hold a deeper, richer color due to the fact that it is subject to less sun exposure than an unprotected fleece. As a added benefit, protected wool is softer because there is so little tip damage due to the protection afforded by the covers. Buyers are realizing that covered wool makes a better product.
Question 4. Do I have to take the covers off for crotching?
No, the covers afford ease of accessiblity for the clippers. Simply lift the leg out of the loop, and the tail end will be readily exposed.
